Is it allowed to assign null to a variable referencing the current object via 'this'?

In Java, it is not possible to assign a null value to a variable referencing the current object via this. The keyword this is a reference to the current instance of the object and is final — it cannot be reassigned or nulled. Attempting to do something like this = null; will cause a compile-time error.
