Where is the data about system users stored?

In a centralized user repository, such as LDAP, Active Directory, or FreeIPA. Depending on the system architecture, data may also be stored in the application's database, a separate authentication/authorization database, or a distributed key/value store. It is important that this data is protected and accessible only to authorized services.
