What is the difference between Linux and Unix?

Linux is the kernel of an operating system, while Unix is a family of operating systems. Linux is a clone of Unix, developed from scratch and distributed under the open GPL license. Unix is a proprietary operating system developed at AT&T Bell Labs, and has many different commercial implementations (e.g., Solaris, AIX, macOS).
