What is float monitoring?

Float monitoring is the process of tracking and controlling floating (non-fixed) resources, tasks, or time in a project schedule.

In project management, the term "float" (or "schedule reserve") refers to the amount of time a task can be delayed without affecting the overall project deadline. Float monitoring helps managers:

• Identify which tasks have slack time and which are critical for deadlines.
• Monitor the use of this reserve to respond promptly to delay risks.
• Optimize resource allocation without causing deadline slips.

Example: if a task has a float of 3 days, it means it can be delayed by 3 days without shifting the project's completion date. Monitoring float allows seeing how this reserve changes during execution and making timely decisions.
