What is mitigate?

Mitigate (from English 'to soften', 'to reduce') is the process of decreasing the negative impact of a risk or problem. In project management, it means taking measures that reduce the likelihood of the risk occurring or its consequences.

For example, if there is a risk of delayed equipment delivery, a mitigation measure could be ordering spare parts in advance or finding alternative suppliers. Thus, mitigate is an active risk management strategy to minimize their impact on the project.
