What is the purpose of the TimSort algorithm and in what cases is it used?

TimSort is a hybrid sorting algorithm that combines ideas from insertion sort and merge sort. It is optimized for real-world data, which often contains already sorted sequences (runs). The algorithm first identifies such runs, sorts them with insertion sort if necessary, and then merges them using merge sort.

TimSort is used in Java for sorting arrays of objects (for example, in the Arrays.sort method for objects) and in Python (built-in sorted function). Its advantage is high performance on partially sorted data and stability of sorting.

It is applied when stability of sorting and efficiency on real-world data, often encountered in applications, are important.
