An Ingress controller in Kubernetes is a component that manages incoming HTTP and HTTPS traffic within the cluster. It implements routing rules described in Ingress resources and directs requests to the appropriate services inside the cluster.

Why is an Ingress controller needed:

• It allows centralized management of access to multiple services through a single external IP or domain name.
• It supports routing based on URL paths and hostnames.
• It provides SSL termination, i.e., handling HTTPS connections.
• It enables the application of additional security policies and load balancing.

Without an Ingress controller, separate LoadBalancers or NodePorts would need to be created for each service, which is inconvenient and costly. The Ingress controller simplifies and standardizes the management of incoming traffic in Kubernetes.
