Can you tell what a Replication Controller is and what role it plays in Kubernetes?

A Replication Controller (RC) in Kubernetes is an object responsible for maintaining a specified number of pod copies (replicas) in the cluster.

Main functions of the Replication Controller:

• Ensuring availability: RC monitors to ensure that the desired number of pods with specific characteristics are always running.
• Automatic recovery: if a pod crashes or is deleted, RC automatically creates a new one to maintain the specified number.
• Updating and scaling: RC can be used to change the number of replicas to scale the application.

Example: if you set the number of replicas in RC to 3, and one of the pods crashes, RC will create a new pod to bring the total back to 3.

It is important to note that in newer versions of Kubernetes, the Replication Controller has been largely replaced by a more powerful object called ReplicaSet, which is used together with Deployment for managing updates and scaling.
