Automatisch schalen voor Amazon RDS Aurora is standaard niet ingeschakeld. Om automatische schaalvergroting te gebruiken, moet deze functie handmatig worden ingesteld, bijvoorbeeld voor Aurora Serverless of door schaling voor Aurora Replica in te schakelen. In een klassieke Aurora-cluster kan automatische toevoeging of verwijdering van replicas worden ingesteld, maar dit vereist expliciete configuratie via de AWS-console of API. Daarom vereist automatische schaalvergroting handmatige activering en configuratie.
